Richard struggles against racist oppression from his early childhood. He refuses to succumb to the humiliation to which the whites subject the blacks in his society.
As he grows, Richard develops a personality that differs significantly from that of the rest of the people including his age group.
It is this peculiar personality that makes him react quite differently in situations which other black people would regard as normal and submit to weakly. Richard’s refusal to sell his dog to the white lady who wants him to undersell it and his refusal to read the valedictory speech prepared for him by his school principal which favours the whites against the blacks. He also quits his job at the optical factory when he experiences cruelty in the hands of his boss. These are his reactions against racist oppression.
