Some of the weaknesses observed from the works of the candidates included:
- Poor composition
The principle of Harmony (unity) was totally disregarded by many candidates in their composition. Rather than drawing the objects as a unified composition, most candidates isolated the objects by drawing them separately from each other. The right approach to drawing is to combine all elements into one single composition.
- Shading deficiency
The element of value, shown in the grading of tones to represent objects in their solid forms and to indicate the source of light was completely disregarded by most candidates. Candidates, in their inability to grade the tones could not depict contrast between the objects and also between the objects and the background.
- Inappropriate use of paper
Candidates could not use the available space appropriately. The proper approach is for candidates to produce a proportional and centralized composition. However as usual, candidates’ drawings were either too small or too large for the available space. In most cases, these drawings were not positioned centrally.
- Non-indication of baseline and background
The baseline and background were not represented in most drawings and this made the drawings to float and not placed within appropriate environment. It is always appropriate to indicate or depict the relationship between the subject matter and the environment and this can only be achieved by an indication of the base upon which the objects are placed, as well as the background.
4. SUGGESTED REMEDIES
The deficiencies outlined above could be addressed through the following actions:
- Understanding the elements and principles of art
Candidates should make effort to understand the elements and principles of art as well as the ways of applying them in artistic compositions. Knowledge of the element of value for example, will enable them to use graded tones to render the actual forms of objects and help them to show contrast between objects. The principle of harmony will also facilitate unity in their composition.
(2) Exposure to quality art works
Students should be exposed to quality art works through visits to art studios, and exhibitions. They can also subject themselves to tutelage under competent professionals.
(3) Constant practice
Students should learn to draw at all times. This makes it imperative for them to arm themselves with sketchpads to enable them engage in constant practice of drawing.
(4) Contextualization of composition
Candidates should learn to stabilize their drawing and place them in appropriate context. An indication of baseline will show the platform upon which objects are arranged and the background will place the composition in a suitable environment. This is necessary in preventing a drawing from hanging loosely in space.
