Weakness/Remedies

Candidates were unable to:
- state the aims of International Livestock Centre for Africa (ILCA) and International Institute for Tropical Agriculture (IITA);
- define surface irrigation;
- explain the terms farmstead and secondary tillage;
- state the functions of the parts of a mouldboard plough;
- describe the natural process that takes carbon away from the atmosphere;
- state the deficiency symptoms of calcium in crops;
- differentiate between natural and artificial pastures;
- state Mendel’s law of independent assortment of genes;
- explain selection, breeding and introduction as methods of animal improvement;
- explain the term farm inventory record;
- state the roles of testosterone and progesterone in animal reproduction;
- highlight the roles of agricultural extension in agricultural development in West Africa; and
- outline the problems faced by agricultural extension workers in West Africa.
Based on the observed weaknesses the Chief Examiners recommended as follow:
- Aspects of the syllabus such as farm mechanization/Agricultural engineering, plant nutrients, crop and animal improvement, agricultural extension amongst others should be emphasized by teachers; and
- Only graduates of Agricultural Science/Agriculture should be allowed to teach the subject in Senior Secondary Schools.
