Question 1

Explain the function of each of the following parts of a coil-ignition system

  1. contact breaker;
  2. coil;
  3. distributor;
  4. condenser;
  5. battery.
(a)  Most of the candidates who attempted this question could not state the functions correctly.

OBSERVATION

Answers, such as contact breaker breaks the contact, or it is for the primary circuits were regarded as vague and were not accepted.
            The required response is contact breaker acts as a mechanically-operated switch which interrupts the flow of battery current through the primary circuit at regular and predetermined interval thereby enabling the coil to produce high voltage current.

(b)        The function of the coil is to increase the battery voltage thereby making it high enough to cause spark at the spark plugs.  This was not also properly explained by most of the candidates.

(c)        The distributor directs the high voltage current produced by the induction coil to the spark plugs in the correct firing order.

(d)       The condenser reduces the arching and burning of the contact breaker points thus prolonging the life span of the points.

(e)        the battery stores chemical energy and supplies electrical current to all the electrical components and systems.

Most of the candidates who attempted c, d, and e were not able to explain the above functions of the distributor, condenser and battery respectively.
