(b) State one advantage and one disadvantage of each of the following:

(i) hand sewing machine

(ii) treadle machine;

(iii) electric sewing machine

(c) Explain how to use the foot of the sewing machine as a guide to straight stitching.

Observation

Candidates do not know the accessories of a sewing machine. They confused it with parts of the sewing machine.

(ii)        Functions of sewing machine accessories

-  Zipper/Piping foot/cord foot – for fixing zippers – for stitching close a piping cord
-   Embroidery foot – for making embroidery on articles
-   Invisible zipper foot – for fixing invisible zippers
-   Gathering foot – gathers fabric and holds the gathering rigidly in position
-   Zigzag foot – for neatening edges/for embroidery
-   Buttonhole foot – for making buttonhole
-   Hemmer foot – used to make very narrow hems on fine fabrics.
-   Darner – Used for embroidery/darning
-   Ruffler – for pleating long lengths of fabric
-   Quilter – designed to hold layers of fabric together and to be a guide for working even rows of machining
-   Binder – for binding.

-     Suitable for a beginner

-     It is less expensive compared to 
      electric and treadle

-   Does not have variety of      
    stitches
-   The worker has only one
     hand to operate
-    Slow to use compared to 
     treadle and electric
-    It has limited functions

                        Treadle Sewing Machine

Advantages

Disadvantages

-    Bother hands are free to 
     manipulate work
-    It is faster than the hand sewing
     machine
-    Can be used anywhere anytime
-     Some of the machine have tops             
      that can be concerted and used
      as a work table

-   Cannot be carried about easily
-  It is not suitable for a beginner
-  It is slow compared to the electric
    machine
-   It has limited functions compared 
    to the electric machine
-   It occupies much space
-   It is more expensive than the

(c)        Straight stitching using foot machine foot

-           Keep the sides of a straight stitch presser foot level with the seam line
-           Watch the foot and not the needle
-           Keep the inner side of the small toe of the presser foot level with the seamline/folder edge.
