Question 2

State an expression for the equivalent resistance (R) of two resistors R1 and R2 connected in

  1. series;
  2. parallel.

                    In Figure 5, calculate the value of

  1. current(I);
  2. voltage(V).

_____________________________________________________________________________________________________
OBSERVATION

The expected answers were:

  1. (i) R1 and R2 in series, RT = R1 + R2

(ii)R1 and R2  in parallel
RCD =

  1. RAB =

       =
       = 6Ω
   RT = 4Ω + 6Ω
        = 10Ω
IS  =
    = 1A
I   =
    = 0.4A
V = IS x 4 Ω = (1 x 4)V
    = 4V

For this question, three important theorems of circuit theory were required; namely: equivalent resistance for resistors connected in parallel and in series, Ohm’s law, and the current divider law. The question was popular. The performance was very encouraging.

Many candidates gave excellent responses to the question.
