Question 2
  1. AIM: To determine the effect of Zener diode on stabilization of a half-wave
            rectifier output.

    1.   Connect the circuit diagram as shown in Figure 1.
    2.   Ask the Supervisor to check the circuit connection.
    3.   Copy Table 1 into your answer booklet.

  1.
  2. Close switch (sw).
  3.   Read and record in Table 2, the voltage (V) and current (I) readings.
  4.   Open switch (sw) and replace the 1 kΩ resistor RL with 2.2 kΩ resistor.
  5.   Repeat steps (d) to (e).
  6.   Repeat step (f), (d) and (e) for other values of RL in Table 2.
  7.   Open switch (sw).
  8.   Using Table 2, plot a graph of voltage (V) on the vertical axis against

current (I) on the horizontal  axis

  1.   Compare the two graphs drawn in Questions 1 and 2, and deduce the

effectiveness of stabilization of the output voltage with and without the
  Zener diode.
The candidates were expected to connect the circuit as shown, measure and record the values of the voltmeter  and ammeter readings, plot a graph of voltage (V) against current (I), compare the two graphs in Questions 1 and 2 and deduce the effectiveness of stabilization.

          (k)      On comparing the two graphs in Questions 1 and 2, the output voltage in
Question 1 fluctuates remarkably with load current variation while in
Question 2, the variation in the output voltage is averagely constant with
                   variation in load current.

As reported by the Chief Examiner, the readings obtained by many of the candidates that answered this question showed that they did not know how to adjust meter settings to correspond to indicated values of measured quantities.
