Candidates performed poorly in Dictée.
Many of them could not spell words in French. In addition, some candidates could not use the French alphabets, sounds or pronunciation correctly. E.g.
In Dictation passages A and B, candidates wrote
“crayon” instead of “croyant”
‘allon’ instead of “allant”
“verre” instead of “vers”
“tu” instead of “tout”
“en” instead of “un”
Some of the candidates left blank spaces for words they could not spell, while some of them
wrote the punctuation marks as if they were part of the Dictation passage, instead of observing them.
In the Reading passages, most of the candidates could not read the passages well. They pronounced words that looked like English words in English accent for instance words like “remplace”, “mode:, “certaines”, “indispensable” “téléphone”, “important” and “communication”.
Most of the candidates pronounced final syllables that are not supposed to be pronounced e.g “utilisent”, circulent, “avancent” etc.
In the Dialogue and Exposition segments, most of the candidates knew nothing on Civilisation and Background studies. Most of them did not understand French instructions like “Lisez”, “Décrivez”, “Racontez”. In addition some of the candidates could not explain acronyms such as CEDEAO, ONU; OAU, UA etc.
SUGGESTIONS FOR IMPROVEMENT
Teachers of French should endeavour to practice all aspects of the Oral French with the students before examination particular attention should also be paid to Civilisation aspect of the French studies.
Teachers should advise students to pay more attention to Dictation during French classes.
Teachers should teach students how to identify and apply the French punctuation marks. They also need to encourage the students to read simple French stories, magazines and journals to acquire more vocabulary.
