Question 1

Two functions f and g are defined on the set R of real numbers by
f : x → x + 1 ,   x ≠ 2 and g : x → kx + 3  ,  x ≠ 0                                                                               x –    2                                           x

(a) Find f-1, the inverse of f.
(b) Given that gof-1(4) = 6, find the value of k.

Observation

This question was well attempted by most candidates and majority were able to derive the inverse function.  However, they should know that the boundary condition x ≠1 is part of the solution. Many candidates did not include it.
