Question 3

(a)   (i)   With the aid of a diagram, identify the main lines of latitudes.
      (ii)   Calculate the  distance between Addis Ababa in Ethiopia (latitude 10º N) and
                  Maseru in Lesotho (latitude 30º S).

(b)   (i)   Define revolution of the earth.
      (ii)   Describe how revolution of the earth  affects the length of day and night in
                     the Northern Hemisphere.

Observation

This was a popular question among the candidates and many of them scored good marks. Such candidates were able to identify the main lines of longitudes namely:

  • Arctic Circle  ( Latitude 66½ºN )
  • Tropics of  Cancer ( Latitude 23½ºN)
  • Equator ( 0 º)
  • Tropic of Capricorn ( Latitude 23½º S)
  • Antarctic Circle ( Latitude 66½ºS)

A  good number of the candidates were able to calculate the distance from Addis Ababa to Maseru correctly.
