QUESTION 4-organ

(a) How does the organ produce sound?
(b) State two types of diapason.
(c) Differentiate between:
                 (i) manual and pedal board;
                 (ii) pistons and stops.

OBSERVATIONS

 

  • Candidates’ performance was average. Their responses to this question were not good enough and this robbed them substantial marks. The following points should have been highlighted in their responses:
  • Air is blown by bellows through pipes to produce sound.
  • The key(s) is depressed to produce sound.
  • The stops are registered to produce sound.
  • Electricity is required to power the organ.
                                                                                       
  • (i) Open diapason
  • (ii) Stopped diapason
    (iii) Horn diapason
    (iv) Diapason phonon   
  • (i)  Manual is played with the hands whereas the pedal board is the
  •   keyboard played with the feet.
                Manual has a wider octave than pedalboard.
                Pedal keys are made of woods while manual keys are made of metals or plastic Pedal keys are bigger than manual keys.                          
         (ii)  Pistons are used to register the stops while stops being registered produce sounds.
