(a) (i) State the two main components of paints.

(d)List five types of materials used for padding in upholstery

Most candidates were able to list types of material used for padding in upholstery. However, they were unable to:
state the main components of paint;
state the function of each of the components;
state the use of templates in the workshop;
sketch the exploded view of a through haunch mortise and tenon joint.
The expected response to question 4 is as given below:

  1. (i) The two main components of paints are:
  2. pigment;
  3. vehicle.

Function of each of the components   in (a) (i):

  1. (a) Pigment:
  2. Provides the paint colour and hide the underlying surface
  3. Added to liquid vehicles to produce opaque finishing coatings.
  4. Vehicle:  the non-volatile   part    of the vehicle forms the film that

binds the pigment to the underlying surface.
The volatile part called the solvent dissolves the film forming material so that it can be easily applied.


  1. The use of templates in the workshopTemplates
  2. Are used as guides for marking out parts in mass production.
  3. It allows repetitive work to be done accurately.
  4. Used to check accuracy of cut shapes.
  5. Sketch of an exploded view of a through haunch mortise and tenon joint
