English Paper 2 May/June 2015

Question 7

    SUMMARY

Observation

The passage was interesting and straight forward and candidates were required to read it and summarize in a given number of sentences, details in the passage. Some candidates were able to do this but it was obvious that a lot of them had problems separating main ideas from details as they merely lifted whole sentences and sometimes, whole paragraphs from the passage.
It was also observed that some candidates used preambles that when taken with the rest of each answer, did not make sentences.

Candidates are expected to understand what the writer tries to convey and summarize it in their own words. Copying copiously from the passage without regard to the demands of the questions cannot be said to be summary writing.
