The weaknesses observed include:

  1. inability to understand the content or message contained in the passages;
  2. poor use of language;
  3. failure to grasp the requirements and demands of the questions attempted;
  4. inability to construct simple and correct sentences;
  5. ignorance of common literary terms;
  6. inability to recognize grammatical name and grammatical function;
  7. illegible handwriting;
  8. indiscriminate use of capital letters;
  9. spelling errors, faulty amalgamation/separation of words;
  10. poor knowledge of the basic rules of English grammar;  
  11. mindless lifting of answers from the passage;
  12. poor use of structural and functional words;
  13. inability to differentiate main ideas from explanations or examples in a paragraph.

  1. Candidates should:
  2. endeavour to improve on their vocabulary of English Language through extensive reading;
  3. learn the rules of English grammar and their exceptions;
  4. take time to understand the exact demands of questions before attempting to answer them;
  5. read through their work to correct spelling and grammatical mistakes before submitting their scripts;
  6. read for meaning and main points of any given passage;
  7. practise essay writing constantly;
  8. converse regularly in simple and correct English expressions;
  9. draw an outline of their essays before writing them;
  10. write clearly and legibly.
