Question 1

Study the map extract provided on a scale of 1:50,000 and answer the following questions:

(a) Print the letters shown in the brackets below on one example of each of the following features on the map:

  • pass (PS);
  • conical hill (CH);
  • ridge (RD);
  • steep slope (SS);

(b) Shade the area below 650ft in the South Western part of the map.

(c)  (i) Draw an annotated cross profile from A to B in the North Eastern part of the map.

(ii) Are points A and B intervisible?  Give one reason for your answer.

(d) State any two human features that can be identified if you are travelling along the road from Ebiya to Iloshi.

This was a compulsory question but the performance of the candidates in the question was just fair.  Many of the candidates who answered the question could not properly locate pass, conical hill, ridge and steep slope.  It is advisable that candidates practice the identification of relief features thoroughly so that they will be competent in the art.  Some of the candidates could not draw the annotated cross profile well.  Much practice/practical work is required on the part of the candidates in this area.  Many of the candidates correctly identified two human features that could be seen along the road as one travelled from Ebiya to Ilosi.
