This was a very unpopular question. The candidates who attempted it were only able to remember amalgamation and naming of Nigeria. To score high marks, they were expected to highlight the following points:
(i) He led the famous ‘Race to Nikki’ when he concluded a treaty with the chiefs which ensured that part of Borno remained within Northern Nigeria.
(ii) He organized the West African Frontier Force against the French to protect the Western Frontier of the Royal Niger Company.
(iii) He stopped Fulani hegemony.
(iv) He brought a heterogeneous collection of tribes together.
(v) He got the Niger area surveyed and mapped, etc. |
