Question 3

  • List any three items used by cloth weavers in the pre-colonial Nigeria.
    Highlight three uses of each of the following:       basket; grass.

OBSERVATIONS

This was a very popular question. Most candidates knew the items used for cloth weaving in the pre- colonial time and scored good marks in (a). However, the (b) part of the question was very challenging to them. They recognised the uses of basket and grass but failed to limit them to the pre-colonial times. Some of the candidates stated modern uses of the items and could not score good marks for that. They were therefore expected to give the following points to score good marks in the questio

(i)         loom;

(ii)         thread;
(iii)        spool;
(iv)        dye.
(b) I.(i)         It was used to drain excess water from cooked cereals;
(ii)        it was used to pack belongings of newly wedded wife to her husband’s house on the night of the wedding day;
(iii)       it was used to transport goods and food items.
II.  (i)   Woven grass (e.g. elephant grass) was used to preserve clothes;
    (ii)        used for the storage of fish, fruits, cereals etc.;
(iii)    used for keeping money, e.g. the small ones.
