Candidates' Weakness

 

      The Chief Examiner observed that the candidates’ showed weaknesses in the following areas:

1. Inability to draw graphs (trigonometry, quadratic and cumulative frequency) and read from it.
2. Omission of units and failure to give state answers in monetary value as required.
3. Non adherence to rubrics (for example, in question 4, the candidates’ were instructed to take . However, some candidates used 3.142).

1. Approximations as well as premature approximations.
2. Poor interpretation of questions and inability to apply mathematical principles correctly.
3. Inadequate knowledge of Construction and Circle Geometry.
4. Too much dependence on the use of Calculators and hence omitted essential workings.
5. Spending too much time on part (a) and hence, they could not complete part (b).

 

SUGGESTED REMEDIES

The Chief Examiner suggested that to overcome the challenges stated, the following remedies should be considered:

 Teachers should endeavor to pay more attention to diagrams related topics especially  

 circle geometry and graphs.Teachers should lay emphasis on writing final answers in the required units while teaching.

 School Proprietors and Government should provide conducive environment and condition

 for effective learning as well as good use of teaching aids.

 

Candidates’ should be encouraged to read questions carefully and understand their requirements before attempting them.

i. Teachers and candidates are encouraged to cover the teaching curriculum while preparing for examination so as to enhance performance.

ii. Teachers should make learning interactive and make use of real life cases while teaching
