3.         (a)       Explain the following terms as used in foundry work:

  1. green sand;
  2. facing sand;
  3. parting sand.

 

            (b)       The sketch shown below is a component undergoing a forging process.
                       

  1. Identify the type of forging process.
  2. List two of the forming tools used to produce the component.

(c)        List one tool each in

  1. drawing down;
  2. jumping up;
  3. twisting.

 

(d)       Sketch a lifting tongs used in foundry work.

OBSERVATION

Candidates’ poor knowledge of technical terms was clearly seen in this question; especially parts (a) and (b).  (c) and (d) were well understood by the candidates.  The required responses to parts (a) and (b) are:
(a)       (i)         Green Sand – it is damped moulding sand;
(ii)        Facing Sand – it is a sieved sand which is in contact with the pattern;
Parting Sand – it is fine dry sand which is dusted over the moulding sand so that the cope and drag can be separated easily.

(b)       (i)         Fullering

(ii)        -           fullers, hammer, anvil, swage
