Question 4 – ORGAN

 Identify any four component parts of the organ from the list below:

  • damper;
  • draw stops;
  • pedal board;
  • piston;
  • sound box;
  • strings;
  • swell;
  • tre corde.
Give two ways by which an organist can increase or decrease the intensity of sound on the organ

Explain any two of the following terms:

  • attaca;
  • mano sinistra;
  • great organ;
  • couplers.

Observation

Candidates’ performance in this question was poor as most of them did not even know what an organ (Pipe Organ) is talk less of even identifying an organist.  This earned most of them low marks while some scored outright zero.

The following are some of the expected answers:-

(a) Draw stops Pedal board, Piston, Swell.

  • (b)Use of Pistons (toe or finger piston)  
  •  Use of switch pedal 
  •  Use of crescendo pedal
    (c)   (i)  Attaca – a term used at the end of a movement to mean ‘start next movement  immediately’ (without a break)
   (ii)   Mano sinistra – left hand usage
    (iii)  Great organ – chief of organ manuals.
