Physics (Essay) Paper 2 May/June 2015

Question 3

A wire of length 2.00 m and radius 1.0 mm is stretched by 25.0 mm on application of a
force of 103 N.  Calculate the Young’s modulus for the wire.

Observation

The question was popular among the candidates but it was poorly attempted.  Conversion of units from  mm to m and appropriate equation Y =   were the problems.  Though few were able to write the correct equation.

The expected answers are:

               3.         Young’s Modulus  =                                                                                                                                 =     2.55  x 1010 Nm-2
