This question was fairly attempted by the candidates. In 2(a-b), most of the candidates were able to state the problems of agricultural development in West Africa and enumerate the benefits of commercial farming. However in 2(c-d), majority of them could not list farm machinery and farm implements and describe how the Gunter’s chain is used.
The expected answers include:
2(c) Farm machinery and farm implement
Farm machinery
- Tractor - Tree puller
- Bulldozer - Incubator
- Sheller - Milking machine
- Dryer - Power tiller
- Combine harvester - Mist blower/motorised knapsack sprayer
- Motorised slasher/lawn mower
Implements
- Plough - Mower/slasher
- Harrow - Knapsack sprayer
- Baler - Planter/seed drill/broadcaster
- Rotavator - Fertilizer applicator/combine drill
- Cultivator - Ridger
- Harvester - Boom sprayer
(d) Description of how the Gunter’s chain is used
- Two people are required: a leader and a follower
- Two fixed points(x and y) are marked with surveying poles such
that one is clearly visible from the other
- Leader pulls chain from one fixed point x towards the other pole y while
the follower holds the end handle firmly against base of first pole x
- Ensure chain is straight and between the 2 points x and y
- Leader pushes an arrow into the ground next to the “leading” handle
- Leader pulls chain towards 2nd pole until follower reaches the arrow
where the chain is firmly held
- Leader pushes another arrow into the ground
- As chain is pulled for another chain length, the follower pulls out the first
arrow
- When the 2nd pole is reached, chain should be pulled past it so that the
chain can be measured
- Distance between the two poles can be calculated by multiplying the
number of arrows held by follower by 20 and adding length of the part of
chain at the end
