Question 5

(a)        Explain the purpose of the suspension system.
(b)        State why shock absorbers are incorporated in the suspension system.
(c)        State two advantages of a tubeless tyre over a tubed type.
(d)       State how the size of a tyre is determined.
(e)        Explain why a swinging shackle is fitted to one end of a leaf spring.

OBSERVATION

Most of the candidates could not distinguish the function of the suspension system from the shock absorbers.

The suspension system is to cushion and damp out road shocks so as to give comfort to the vehicle occupants and prevent damage to the load in the vehicle.  Shock absorbers on the other hand absorb the energy stored in the spring and so reduce the time that the vehicle bounces.

Part (c) of the question was well attempted by most of the candidates but parts (d) and (e) proved difficult for them.  The required response to part (d) is:  Tyres sizes are determined according to the sectional width and rim diameter.  For part (e) of the question the required response is:  The swinging shackle allows the spring to vary in length or to allow the spring to extend as it is deflected.
