Question 4
- (a) Draw the following handtools used in an Auto Electrical Works workshop.
- (i)Test lamp
- (ii)Spanner
- (iii)Side cutters
- (iv)Screwdriver
- (ii)State one function of each of the tools in 4 (a)(i).
- (b)State the function of the following regulators in the charging unit of a motor vehicle:
- (i)voltage;
- (ii)current.
- In a generator, if the slip rings were replaced with a commutator, what type of current would be at the output?
Observation
The expected answers were:
- (A) Diagram of tools used in Auto Electrical Works workshop
- (ii)Uses of tools drawn in 4(a)
I-Test lamp: to check for continuity/presence of voltage.
Spanner: for loosening and tightening bolt and nut
Side cutters: for cutting wires
Screw driver: to loosening and tightening screws
- (b) Function of voltage regulator in the charging unit of a motor vehicle
- To control the amount of output voltage of the regulator.
- To regulate the charging/output voltage that an alternator produces (keeping the output voltage within 13.5 – 14.5 volts)
- To protect the electrical components in the vehicle against over voltage.
- (iii) Function of current regulator in the charging unit of a motor vehicle
- To adjust the charging current to suit the state of change of the battery;
- Prevents overcharging of the battery;
- Protect the alternator against overloading.
- (c) A direct current (DC) will be produced.
Many candidates were able to draw the hand tools properly. However, many candidates also gave the importance of voltage and current instead of voltage and current regulators.
