The weaknesses of candidates which are recurrent were observed to be:
- poor speUing of technical terms;
- inability to properly express themselves in English Language;
- poor performance in higher order questions e.g. questions requiring application of knowledge
and analysis;
- answering questions in a bullet form;
- generally poor spelling, writing spellings like text message SMS e.g, using 'd' instead of
'the';
- shallow knowledge of a large number of the tested concepts;
- poor performance in questions on genetics and drawing of poor genetic diagrams.
- The following solutions were proffered to overcome these weaknesses:
Teachers should:
- endeavour to cover the syllabus before the onset of the examinations;
- spend time to teach the concept of genetics preferably with charts and models;
- emphasize on the importance of proper spelling of biological terms;
- conduct spelling drills regularly to improve candidates' ability to spell technical terms.
Students should
- read their notes and text books prescribed by the schools before the onset of the
examinations;
- attempt to answer past W ASSCE Biology questions to help them adequately prepare for the
examinations.
