Question 2

(a)        List three types of clay brick.

(b)        Use a sketch to illustrate the builders’ square method of setting out a building.

(c)        State in sequence, the five stages involved in producing sandcrete blocks.

 

Observation

Most candidates were able to list three tools used in setting out.  However, they failed to:

-           show a sketch illustrating the builders’ square method of setting out a building;
-           state in sequence stages involved in producing sandcrete blocks.

The expected response to question 2 is as given below:

2(a)       Any three setting-out tools

  1. line and pin;
  2. spirit level;
  3. steel square;
  4. builder’s square;
  5. measuring tape;
  6. club hammer;
  7. hand saw;
  8. claw hammer
  9. pegs;
  10. trammel/template;
  11. straight-edge;
  12. plumb rule;

  • batching of the materials;
  • mixing of sand, cement and water;
  • moulding/casting of the blocks;
  • curing of the blocks;
  • drying of the blocks;
  • stacking of the dried blocks;
  • transporting of the blocks.
