Observation

Most candidates were able to:

-           sketch jointing board and spirit level;
-           list three tools used in setting out operation.

However, few candidates were unable to state three safety rules that must be
observed on a building site.

 

The expected response to question 1 is as given below:

1. (a)        Safety rules that must be observed on Building Site

(i)         Correct protective clothing must be worn, such as helmet, goggles, hand glove, hard boots, safety belt, overall etc.
(ii)        No horse – playing is allowed.
(iii)       Warning signs must be posted regarding accident prone areas and obeyed.
(iv)       Barricades must be erected near excavations.
(v)        Scaffolds must be erected properly and inspected before use.
(vi)       The use of machines without guards must be avoided.
(vii)      Provision of First –Aid facilities.
(viii)     Temporary supports should be provided for the sides of excavation, e.g. timbering.
(ix)       Vibration activities should be avoided around the excavation areas.
(x)        Proper handling of all tools to avoid injury.
(xi)       Adherence to the instructional/operational manuals of all tools, plant and equipment.
(xii)      Competent personnels should be allowed to operate mechanical plant and equipment on site.
(xiii)     Faulty equipment should not be used.
