Observation
This was one of the less popular questions and the performance of candidates was below average. The weaknesses of those who attempted it lies in their inability to show good mastery of the passage and trace the events from Peter’s assumption of leadership, his emphasis on the need to fulfil scripture by finding a replacement for Judas Iscariot to the selection of Matthiasto be one of the twelve apostles. Points candidates were required to write include;
- After ascension, Peter assumed leadership of the brethren.
- The brethren who met were about a hundred and twenty in number.
- He reminded them of the need to fulfill the scripture by maintaining twelve apostles.
- He quoted David in Psalms to support his suggestion.
- The Psalmist says let his habitation become desolate and let no one dwell there.
- And his office let another take.
- Since the place of Judas Iscariot in the ministry had become vacant, there was a need to replace him.
- The person to replace him must be somebody who had witnessed with Jesus from the time of His baptism to his death and resurrection.
- Joseph also called Barsabbas and Matthias who were qualified for the position were nominated.
- The disciples / congregation prayed to God to assist in making the right choice.
- After their prayers, they cast lots and the lots fell on Matthias.
- Matthias was then enrolled as one of the twelve to replace Judas.
Godly principles of electing a leader
- Seeking God’s guidance in choosing a leader.
- Consideration should be given to character and qualities of a person to be elected into positions of authority
- Elections should be free and fair
- Leaders should not be imposed but rather be determined by the will of the people.
- Election results should be taken in good faith
- After election, there should be no opposition or enmity
- The elected persons should give thanks to God and be ready to serve.
