Observation

Majority of the candidates were able to:

• State four causes of accident on a work site;
• State four safety rules to be observed when using sharp edge cutting tools.

However, majority of them were unable to:

• list the portable power tool used for each of the following operation on site:

•  Cutting rafters to length;
• Cutting a mould on a door frame;
• Cutting mortise for a mortise lock;
• Smoothing the surface of a door.

The expected response to question 6 is as given below:
6.(a)  Causes of accident on  a worksite:
-          not wearing safety clothing;
-          poor storage of materials and equipment;      
-           not obeying safety rules and regulations;
-          insecure scaffolds and ladders;
-           inadequate clearing of site;
-           poor weather conditions;
-           improper handling of tools;
-           over – confidence. 

(b)    Safety rule to be observed when using sharp edge cutting tool:
-           do not test the sharpness of the tool with your finger;
-           do not hand over the sharp edge to another worker;
-           do not use if the cutting edge is blunt;
-           keep fingers away from cutting edge;                                 
-           never carry sharp tools in your pockets;
-           always grind off a mushroom head;
-           always cut and chisel away from yourself;
-           never use tools with loose handles;
-           always carry cutting tools with the sharp edge down.

(c)  Portable power tools used for the following operation:

(i)     Cutting rafter to length                    -     Portable circularsaw, chainsaw.
(ii)    Cutting a mould on a door frame    -     Portable router.
(iii)   Cutting mortise for a mortise lock  -     Portable drill, portable router.            
(iv)   Smoothing the surface of a door      -     Portable orbital sander.
