Observation
Majority of the candidates were able to:
- state five safety precautions to be observed while using a jointer;
- state the specific use of each of the following tools:
- Cross-cut saw;
- Spoke shave;
- Cutting guage.
However, some of them were unable to list four housekeeping equipment that are used in carpentry workshop.
The expected response to question 6 is as given below:
6 (a) Safety precautions to be observed while using the jointer:
- allow the machine to attain its maximum speed before feeding;
- make sure the machine has come to a complete stop before leaving the workshop;
- make sure the bridge guard is properly fixed;
- make sure the fence is at right angle to the table;
- the depth adjustment knob should be properly locked;
- use a tail-off person when planning long pieces;
- do not let your hand pass over the cutter;
- put off the machine before making any adjustment;
- proper safety clothing should be worn.
(b) Specific use of each of the following tools:
- Cross-cut saw: is used for cutting across the grain of timber.
- Spokeshave: is used for planing curved edges.
- Cutting guage: It is mainly used for marking lines parallel to the ends of timber.
(c) Housekeeping equipments that are used in Carpentry and Joinery Workshop:
- broom;
- brush;
- mop;
- bucket;
- dust pan;
- dustbin;
- wheel barrow;
- respirator/ nose mask;
- hand gloves;
- duster;
- soap;
- disinfectants.
