Observation
This question was equally popular. Most of the candidates who attempted it performed creditably well and scored high marks. Nevertheless, some candidates deprived themselves of good marks as they wrote about the cause of HIV/AIDS in the (a) part of the question rather than writing about the preventive measure of HIV/AIDS. Some candidates also wrote the same points for preventing HIV/AIDS as same as managing HIV/AIDS, probably because they could not comprehend the actions words verbs used in both part of the question.. The candidates were expected to provide the following answers to the question:
(a) i. Distribution of sterilized needles, syringes and other equipments to hospitals.
ii. Destruction of used needles, syringes and other equipments.
iii. Encouraging unmarried people to abstain from casual sex
iv. Avoiding contact with infected body fluid such as blood.
v. Encouraging protective sex through the use of condom.
vi. Promotion of Voluntary Counseling and Testing (VCT)/knowing one’s HIV/AIDS status.
vii. Establishment and operation of drug treatment facilities.
viii. Establishment of drug substitution therapy programmes.
ix. Referral for drug treatment/ Anti Retroviral Therapy (ART) and rehabilitation.
x. Promotion of Sexually Transmitted Infections (STI) education/teaching of sex/HIV/AIDS education in schools.
(b) i. Taking the recommended Anti-Retroviral Therapy (ART) drugs as at when due.
ii. Eating balanced diet.
iii. Staying positive about survival.
iv. Engaging in productive exercises.
v. Discouraging stigmatization of People Living With HIV/AIDS (PLWHAS).
vi. Subsidizing the cost of treatment of People Living With HIV/AIDS (PLWHAS).
vii. Early discovery of one’s HIV status.
viii. Going for regular medical counseling.
