Question 2

  1. (i)      Sketch the back pattern of a skirt which has a dart and a zipper.

(ii)    Indicate five pattern symbols on the skirt including the features stated
          in 2(a)(i) above. 
 

  1.          State the use of each of the following in clothing construction:
  1.    thread
  2.    stitch ripper;
  3.    “T” square;
  4.      hem gauge;
  5.      long and short tacking

2.  State three different ways of obtaining patterns.

OBSERVATION

They did not do well in this question may be because it involved sketching and pattern drafting.

The required answers to the questions are as follows:

   
(a)     Back pattern of a skirt

(b)        Uses of the following:

(i)         Thread marking:   This is a temporary stitch used to mark
         fitting lines, pleat lines, etc.

(ii)        Stitch ripper:    It is a small needlework tool used for
unpicking stitches. Also used for cutting   
button hole.

(iii)       ‘T’ Square:    It is used for drafting especially for making straight lines.

(iv)       Hem guage:    It is used for measuring small parts of a  garment e.g. seams, hems, pleats, etc.

  • Long and short tacking:  This is a temporary stitch used for holding seams and hems in position for stitching. Also used for making embroidery and as a filling stitch.

(c)        Difference ways of obtaining patterns

  • Drafting
  • Draping or modeling
  • Commercial patterns
  • Flat pattern designing
  • Free hand cutting
  • Knock off design Grading
