(a)        How earth leakage can occur in an installation.
Leakage can occur in an installation when the metal part of an installation touches the live conductor. This may be due to faulty appliance, poor termination, incorrect polarity, disconnection, etc.

(b)        How discrimination is achieved in an installation.
                                         

Discrimination is achieved in the circuit if a fault occurs at point D. This should not affect any other circuit connected to point A except point D only. When this happens then discrimination is said to have been achieved.
