The passages dealt with familiar subject matter with a choice of words that were appropriate and within the ability of the candidates. The questions were not ambiguous and the lexical items had many options.
In spite of all these, many candidates resorted to copying copiously portions of the passage to answer the questions. In question 6(f), most candidates could not identify the figure of speech- most of them wrote “personification” instead of “simile”. Also, many candidates could not identify the grammatical name and function demanded for in question 6(g) and 7(g). Candidates should make serious effort to understand the demands of the questions before writing their answers.
