This question was also reported to be poorly attempted by majority of the candidates. According to the report, majority of the candidates’ responses indicated poor understanding of integration.
Candidates were expected to integrate the integrand and then substitute the limits thus:
= = 3m2 – 5m - = 3m2 – 5(m - 1) - 3.
= 4 implied that 3m2 - 5(m + 1) - 3 = 4 i.e. 3m2 – 5m – 12 = 0. By factorizing this equation we have (3m + 4)(m 3) which gave m = 3. The other value of m = was not accepted because of the condition in the question which stated that m > 0.
