This question was very unpopular among the candidates. Most candidates could not properly locate landlocked countries. Landlocked countries are countries which because of their location, have no boundary with the ocean.
In Africa, such countries include Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Chad, Central Africa Republic, Uganda, Rwanda, Burundi, Malawi, Zambia, Zimbabwe, Botswana, Swaziland and Lesotho. The problems affecting landlocked countries include:
- inadequate security of goods at the ports
- high freight costs
- problem of trans-shipment
- loss of custom duty revenues
- susceptibility to border closure
- political dependence on other coastal countries
- loss of goods in transit
- spoilage of goods in transit
- risk of accident
- language problems
- currency problems.
