Geography Paper 3 WASSCE (SC), 2016

CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESS

The following weaknesses were observed in the candidates’ scripts:

  1. Inaccurate Measurement and Calculation of Road Distance: Some candidates could not accurately measure the required distance by road from Okpakhumi to the road junction at SABONGIDDA. Even when some were able to measure correctly, they were not able to apply the map scale to get the actual distance on ground.
  2. Inability to Correctly Measure Bearing: Some of the candidates could not accurately measure the bearing of Lawyer’s Camp from Okebe.
  3. Poor Description of the Relief of the Mapped Area: Some of the candidates poorly described the relief of the mapped area.
  4. Scanty Explanation of Points: Some candidates merely listed points that ought to have been explained thus losing precious marks.
  5. Use of Poor Diagrams: Some of the candidates could not draw good diagrams to explain the formation of ox-bow lake and to give description of barchans.

SUGGESTED REMEDIES TO OVERCOME CANDIDATES’ WEAKNESSES

The following are suggested remedies to overcome candidates’ weaknesses:

    1. Accurate Measurement of Distances: Candidates are advised to use rulers to measure straight line distances and thread to measure winding distances. They should also be able to convert map distances to ground distances making use of the scale of the map.
      1. Correct Measurement of Bearing: Candidates should practice the act of measuring bearings of places relative to another. This will lead to perfection of the act.
      2. Proper Description of the Relief of Mapped Area: Candidates should study and understand the identification of various relief features on maps. They should be able to explain the topographical map in terms of the highland and lowland areas and relate them to the drainage of the mapped area.
      3. Adequate Explanation of Points: points that needed to be explained should be explained in order to secure full marks. Candidates should not merely list points and hope to get full marks in most questions.
      4. Use of Well Labelled Diagrams: Where diagrams are required to explain the characteristics of a feature and its mode of formation e.g. ox-bow lake, such diagrams should be neatly drawn and properly labelled.
