Geography Paper 3 Aug./Sept. 2018

Question 1

Study the map extract provided on a scale of 1:50,000 and use it to answer the questions that follow.

  1. In your answer booklet, draw an outline of the mapped area to a scale of 1:150,000.
    On your new outline, insert and name:

    1. River Toza;
    2. The length of the minor road;
    3. KARLAHI settlement.
  2. Calculate the length of the minor road from Marabu to KARLAHI.
  3. Using evidence from the map, explain three functions of KARLAHI settlement.
  4. Suggest four possible reasons for the absence of roads in the north western part of the map.

Observation

This compulsory question was attempted by nearly all the candidates and the performance of the candidates was just fair as some of the candidates could not reduce the map to 1/3 of its original outline. Consequently, those who could not reduce the map correctly were unable to locate the required features accurately. While quite a good proportion of the candidates were able to answer the (b) and (c) parts of the question correctly, others could not tackle the (d) part of the question which required them to suggest four possible reasons for the absence of roads in the northwestern part of the mapped area. The expected answers were:

  • numerous rivers that would required many bridges.
  • slopes are too steep for road construction.
  • presence of numerous cliffs.
  • severely dissected upland creating rugged topography.
  • no major settlement in the area.
  • limited economic activities.
  • valleys are deep and numerous.
  • absence of passes to allow passage of roads.
