Study the map extract provided on a scale of 1:50,000 and answer the questions that follow.
- Using a vertical scale of 1cm to 50ft, draw an annotated cross profile along line X-Y.
- Calculate the length of the minor road from the dispensary at Uhomora to Ugiavon.
- Identify three human features and three physical features that are visible from the road as one travels from Uhomora to Aviosi.
This was a compulsory question meant to be answered by all candidates. It was attempted by virtually all the candidates who took the examination. Their performance in the question was just fair as a good proportion of the candidates could not properly draw the cross profile. Some of them located the points correctly, but rather than use a smooth curve to join the points, they used series of straight lines thereby losing valuable marks. The required profile is
A good percentage of the candidates got the linear measurement correctly and applied the scale of the map to get the correct ground distance. An equally good percentage of the candidates who attempted the question were able to correctly specify human and physical features that are visible from the specified road.
