 This question was attempted by many candidates and their performance was good.  In part (a) candidates correctly stated ways of ensuring food hygiene.  In part (b) candidates’ failed to state advantages of steaming food.

In part (c)(i) candidates correctly stated ways by which cholera is spread and in (a)(ii) candidates also correctly state symptoms of cholera.

However, the expected answers are as follows:

4(a)      WAYS OF ENSURING FOOD HYGIENE

  1. covering food from flies
  2. washing cooking utensils properly
  3. cleanliness of the food
  4. ensuring clean environment / storage
  5. personal cleanliness of food handlers

                                                    
  (b)      ADVANTAGES OF STEAMING FOOD

  1. food is more digestible / properly cooked / gives good taste
  2. there is little loss of nutrients / water-soluble vitamins are retained
  3. food is not broken into pieces
  4. food is unlikely to be overcooked

 

               (c)(i) WAYS OF SPREADING CHOLERA

  1. eating contaminated food / fruit
  2. drinking contaminated water
  3. using contaminated utensils

               
                (ii)    SYMPTOMS OF CHOLERA

  1. stooling / watery stool / diarrhoea
  2. vomiting
  3. dehydration / fluid loss
  4. weakness of the body
  5. severe pains / cramps
  6. rapid / shallow breathing
  7. loss of weight
