    The diagram below illustrates the oral cavity in humans. Study it and answer questions6(a) and 6(e).

    (a) Identify the parts labeled I, II, III and IV.     [4 marks]
    (b)  (i) State one function each of the parts labeled I, III and IV. [3 marks]
    (ii) State two functions of the part labeled II.  [2 marks]
    (c) Mention four diseases that could be associated with the cavity. [4 marks]
    (i) List two bones that are associated with the cavity. [2 marks]
    (ii) Mention five ways of caring for the cavity.    [5 marks]

Observation

This question was popular among candidates as many attempted it and their performance was generally above average. Many however lost vital marks in Question 6(a) to spelling error. Many candidates also wrongly stated ‘for tearing’ instead of ‘for cutting or biting’ as the function of III as required in Question 6(b)(ii).

- Eat healthy/balanced diet
- Do not smoke or chew tobacco
- Do not use the teeth to open bottle top/corks
- Avoid eating too hot/ cold food
- Visit the dentist regularly
- Do not use sharp object on the teeth
- Avoid eating hard bone
