This was a good question and was popular among the candidates. Some of those who attempted it provide the relevant answers. However, the few ones merely gave the ways by which the Nigerians resisted the British without citing any specific example. Some other candidates merely mentioned Jaja of Opobo, Nana of Itsekiri etc. without relating them to any specific historical development. The worst category of the candidates in this question erroneously gave answers related to nationalist and independence movement in Nigeria and cited Nnamdi Azikiwe, Herbert Macaulay etc. However, for the candidates to get good marks, they were expected to identify the following points:

• Some Nigerian rulers refused to sign treaties that subjected their territories to the     British “protection” e.g. Jaja of Opobo and Nana Olomu of Itsekiri land;
• Open warfare was used in some areas to resist the British e.g. Benin;
• guerilla tactics were used;
• the use of diplomacy in order to divert the British attention from their territories   e.g. The Aro of Igbo land;
• many Nigerian nation-states used sabotage and civil disobedience to resist the British e.g. The Brassmen who attacked the Royal Niger Company’s headquarters at Akassa.
