Examine Dennis Brutus’ use of imagery in The Sun on this Rubble

The poet makes effective use of imagery to convey his experience of life under
the apartheid system in South Africa. The following points were expected to be
developed by the candidates.
- The image of a pile of garbage “rubble”
- The image of “jackboots” which “crunch” not only the physical “bore” but also the “spirits” of the people.
- The image of “pride-dumbed mouths”
- The difference between the house of the white and black people. “spirits”, “sweat-tear” sodden slush”, “Sharpeville” etc.
Most of the candidates performed poorly in this question, some candidates stated
the lines of imagery without stating its effectiveness.
