Observation

Many candidates attempted this question. However, many of them merely narrated Bigger’s outing with Mary and his killing her. They failed to mention the irony of their relationship and Bigger’s misunderstanding of Mary’s friendly approach.

The following points were expected from the candidates:

• Bigger’s upbringing under harsh racial prejudices and its effect on his life.
• Bigger as Mr Dalton’s chauffeur.
• Bigger’s misplaced attitude towards Mary Dalton’s genuine friendliness.
• Drunk Mary helped into her room by Bigger.
• Mrs Daltons sudden appearance in Mary’s room leading to the inadvertent murder of mary by Bigger.
• The irony of the relationship.
