Literature-In-English Paper 2 WASSCE (PC 2ND), 2018

    Question 6

    RICHARD WRIGHT: Native Son

What are Bigger’s reasons for his bitterness against the white man in the novel?

Observation

Many candidates attempted this question. Most of them gave mere and general narration of the situation without particularly addressing the demands of the question.

The following points should be well developed by the candidates:

  • Bigger’s bitterness as a reaction to the oppressive system of segregation.
  • Bigger’s bitterness as a reaction to the lack of opportunities.
  • Bigger’s bitterness resulting from the feeling that his relationship with others, even blacks is conditioned.
  • Bigger’s bitterness as a result of blacks’ exclusion from politics.
  • Bigger’s bitterness as a result of the sense of shame instilled by racial segregation.

Candidates’ performance was good.
