Question 2
AMMA DARKO: Faceless
Discuss parental negligence in the novel.
Observation
This was a popular question. Many candidates observed that Maa Tsuru’s irresponsibility contributed to her children becoming street children. However, their answers seemed not to include the definition of parental negligence.
The following points were expected from the candidates:
- Definition of parental negligence.
- Maa Tsuru’s father’s refusal to accept responsibility for her mother and herself.
- Parents reversing the role with children, as in the case of Maa Tsuru.
- Male parents neglecting care for children.
- Parents failing to correct and keep children on track as seen in Odarley’s mother.
- Parents bullying children as seen in Poison’s step-father.
- Parents exploiting children for financial gain.
Candidates’ performance was good.
