What is the relationship between Cathy and Hareton?
This question requires the candidates to examine the relationship that exists between Cathy and Hareton. Most responses were mere narration.
Candidates were expected to discuss:
- The interplay of love and revenge as the dominant theme in the novel
- Character identification of Cathy and Hareton
- Their relationship: they are cousins, the two fall in love. Heathcliff is not happy with this development, but can’t do anything about it. Cathy and Hareton eventually marry
- The effect of the relationship on Heathcliff: Unable to direct the cause of the relationship between Cathy and Hareton, Heathcliff repines in dismay and becomes a hermit. He later dies totally frustrated.
- Contribution to development of the plot: the relationship foreshadows the imminent unity of Thrushcross Grange and Wuthering Heights. Their union confounds Heathcliff’s vengeance and resolves the major conflict in the novel.
