OBSERVATION
Santiago is an old man who lives in an obscure and poorly furnished shanty alone without a wife or children. Apart from Manolin no other friend is mentioned. The old man has no illusion about his loneliness which becomes aggravated when Manolin is constrained to leave him for another fisherman with better luck. In his unending monologue he surrenders himself to wild dreams and escapist fantasies that are best imagined in conditions of solitude.
As his loneliness continues to take hold, Santiago goes down memory lane and tries to recapture the distant past and recent experiences in desperate search for human sounds and sights.
