The Chief Examiner reported that some candidates’ responses indicated poor understanding and application of some basic mathematical principles and concepts, hence candidates’ weakness in the following areas:
(1) Circle geometry;
(2) Geometrical construction;
(3) Mensuration of three dimensional shapes;
(4) Reading from graphs;
(5) Writing answers to the required degree of accuracies;
(6) Trigonometry.
SUGGESTED REMEDIES
The following suggestions were proffered
- Teachers and candidates were encouraged to cover all the topics in the syllabus while preparing for the examinations;
- More effort should be put into the teaching and learning of various mathematical concepts and theories. The use of teaching aids should be emphasized;
- Adequate supervision of the teaching and learning of Mathematics was encouraged;
- Appropriate authorities should encourage qualified Mathematics teachers to teach the subject;
- Training and refresher courses should be organized for teachers in order to ensure improvement in the quality of teaching;
- Candidates were encouraged to expose themselves to past WASSCE question papers;
- Candidates should adequately prepare for examinations.
