The Chief Examiner reported that part (a) of the question was very well attempted by the candidates and majority of them scored all the marks for the part. Candidates were able to open the brackets to have 7x + 4 < 2x + . They also brought like terms together to have 5x < -. Dividing both sides by 5 gave x < - . Some candidates were reported to have divided by -5 instead of 5 and therefore changed the direction of the sign of inequality. Others wrote their answers with the sign of equality instead of inequality.
In part (b), candidates’ performance was reported not to be as good as it was in part (a) even though majority of the candidates attempted it. They were reported not to get the required ratio correctly.
Candidates were expected to express Salem, Sunday and Shaka’s share with variables say x, y and z respectively. From the second statement of the question, x : y = 4: 1 and y : z = 2 : 1. i.e. = or x = 4y and = or z = y. Thus x : y : z = 4y : y : y which simplified to x : y : z = 8 : 2 : 1. Shaka’s share would then be 1100 = N 100.00
